Examination malpractice is very common among young people today. People often times go through the pressure of academic success so in order to get past the pressure, they resort to malpractice.
Often times students in this situation get caught & the consequences always await them.
Exams malpractice is when students go contrary to examination rules & regulation in an attempt to improve their grades.
If exam malpractice is encouraged, the real essence of the exams and education as a whole which is to test one’s knowledge would have been defeated.
In this articles, I will examine the possible causes of examination malpractice and great remedies available.
Causes of Examination Malpractice
Family
Parents also contribute to this menace we are facing today. A parent would pay fees for his/her child & it ends there.
It shouldn’t work that way. Parents are meant to be guides. It is the responsibility of parents to guide their children all through their education.
How can they do this? Frequent checkup, check your child progress. Follow up on the lessons he/she receives in class.
If he/she isn’t doing too well, an additional tutor can be organized for him/her. It can help to boost the child’s confidence & IQ.
A child with confidence in his academics can’t engage in exam malpractice because he/she will always be prepared for it.
Educational System
It is quite unfortunate that some of the teachers employed to impart knowledge are either not qualified or lock the insight on how to impart such knowledge.
Some teachers develop notes only to read the same note to student without basic explanation & expect them to understand. They solve easy classwork only to give take home assignment that students don’t understand.
At times students are not even carried along & worst of it all our educational system contributes to it by admitting large crowds of students into a particular class which reduce the students – teacher relationship.
Some teachers couldn’t careless; majority are after their salaries. Most of them happened to be pushed from other fields to teach because they can’t get jobs.
Even school owners see schools as business institution. These can make students indulge in exams malpractice.
The Environment/Society
The environment in which a child stays can influence him negatively or positively. Nowadays, failure is seen as an abomination.
Anyone who fails is mocked to scorn. Failure should be seen an opportunity to brace up. Great men who failed saw it as an opportunity to do better.
So some students, rather than taking the risk of failing, they indulge in examination malpractice.
Peer Pressure
The association a child keeps can lead him/her to misbehave. If the child goes round with people who do not study, he will eventually lose focus & be lured into exams malpractice.
Laziness on the Child’s Part
Some students prefer to spend more time on pleasure than allocate time to studies. They end up piling a lot of school work & when exams approach they can’t cover up, the need to cheat now arises.
The Labour Market
In the labour market today, without a certificate, you are most likely not to get a job. So because of that, everyone wants to get one by all means.
So even those who would have been better at skill acquisition would still want to be educated. Some of them find themselves struggling to make up their grades.
It is also a situation like this, where one indulges in a course he/she can’t handle the need for examination malpractice now arises.
Remedies to Examination Malpractice
- Authorities should ensure that qualified teachers are employed through provision of oral & written test.
- Seminars and talk shows should be organized to train teachers on the need to impart knowledge & not just teaching.
- Reduced population in schools; it is better to have no. of students that can be controlled in a class rather than admit a whole crowd. Reduced population would increase the students-teacher relationship.
- On the part of the students, thorough preparation is required for exams success.
- There should be a balance between a child’s academic activities and other extra-curricular activities.
- Parents should also study, understand and as well allow their children to make choice of courses they feel suite them.
