Asides the CV, many employers look up to social media to find out information about potential employees before they can be hired for jobs.
Your social media profile shows your personality. With all the benefits social media comes with, it is also the reason why many job seekers don’t get the job they need.
At times they get carried away with what they post on social media so during interviews or screening when the employers get to find out, that automatically is a disqualification for them.
Why Your Social Media Behaviour could be costing you a Job
It is advisable to be mindful of what your social media says about you. It can either make or mar you, not withstanding, if the information on your social media isn’t something to show forth, you can take time to re vamp it to portray your kind of person and prevent issues from occurring in the future.
What Employers Seek for on Social Media
Having knowledge of what employers may be looking for in your social media profile can go a long way in helping what information to retain or not.
Rather than use this to promote or brand themselves, people use this to all sorts of lies. Your bio should represent your personality and it should correspond to what’s in your CV.
It should show your capabilities and potentials, telling lies isn’t allowed. Some job seekers have their profile say “Manager at Megan Oil & Gas” whereas they’re looking for jobs and that’s a great turn off for most recruiters.
Your photos show your personality. Having photos of your drinking, wearing indecent clothes and indulging in all sort of lavish lifestyle on your profile is a no for recruiters.
While having fun, remember that your social media should be off it.
Username / Emails
Is your username / email professional? I came across an email few days ago; firstname.lastname@example.org. That alone is enough to tell the kind of person you are.
Your email / username must be professional. If your username was created back when you were much younger, then you can modify them to something better.
It is possible that back then you didn’t really know what you were doing and you thought usernames were just for fun so you call yourself anything.
Getting into unnecessary banter, word exchange etc doesn’t speak well of you. If you must indulge in an argument, do that sensibly without unnecessary banter.
Likes & Shares
The kind of post you like and share say a lot about you even if you do not realize.
Spelling / Grammar
Short cuts have become the order of the day on social media and this can affect you as a job seeker. Learn to write/type in full.
Also, it is okay to make grammatical / spelling errors but having errors in every single post you make and making it difficult for people to read through shows incapability; recruiters may reconsider especially is the job would have involved writing.
To avoid having issues from anywhere, most people would think that not having online presence would help but then employers may either feel like you have a skeleton in your cupboard or you have nothing to offer.
If you are doubting the post you made on your profile over time, then you need to take time and recheck them then make changes.
The changes you can make include:-
If you didn’t have one before then you know better but if yu did and the name wasn’t professional, you need to change it.
You can change your profile. It could be a relief when seeking for a job.
Take Down Bad Posts
Go through your profile, fi there’s any post you made that seems questionable then remove them.
